Inspiration

The inspiration for my Wales mythology projects is Horrible Histories.

“Horrible Histories is an award-winning British children’s television series based on the Terry Deary book series of the same name. The first series was thirteen episodes long, and was broadcast from 16 April to 9 July 2009 on CBBC on BBC One. A second series, of twelve episodes (not counting the “Savage Songs Special”), aired from 31 May 2010 to 27 July 2010. A Christmas special was broadcast on 17 December 2010, and a third series, also of twelve episodes (again not including the “Savage Songs Special” at the end), aired from 30 May 2011 to 26 July 2011 on CBBC. A fourth series was broadcast 9 April 2012 and will run until 8 June 2012 (including the “Savage Songs Special” traditionally shown at the end of each series, composed of various songs featured in that series). A Halloween special will be broadcast 31 October 2012 after series 4 has finished airing in June, with Series five already in writing stages. A spin-off game show entitled Gory Games aired its first series alongside Series 3 in 2011, hosted by Dave Lamb and returned for a second series in 2012 along with Series 4 of its parent show, and a second spin-off show, Horrible Histories with Stephen Fry, began on 19 June 2011, looking back on the best sketches of the show during its first two series on BBC One on prime time Sunday nights, and so far only one series was confirmed and aired.”

Horrible Histories was a TV show which I used to be excited to come home from school and watched every night on CBBC channel. I will use the Horrible Histories style of Illustration to create my Wales project pieces.
This is a perfect theme for my family target audience and will work well in promoting Wales in a modern and fun way.

Aberdovey, Gwynedd

Aberdovey is a small peaceful seaside village nestling on the north side of the Dyfi estuary. A popular resort for many years it has a thriving little harbour and sits within Snowdonia National Park, where the river Dyfi meets the blue waters of Cardigan Bay.

Aberdovey is a haven for those wanting to spend an energetic holiday. It has watersports galore, including sailing, sailboarding, fishing, boat trips and the summer regatta. It also has an 18 hole championship golf course.

Accommodation in Aberdovey represents excellent value. You can choose from guest houses, self-catering flats and hotels within the village in addition to farmhouse accommodation, chalets, camping and mobile and static caravan sites.

The area around Aberdovey is littered with attractions. For example, the Talyllyn Railway, which starts in Tywyn, is well worth a visit and there are numerous historical sites within close driving distance in addition to spectacular mountain and valley scenery including the peaks of the Cader Idris and Aran Fawddwy ranges. This is an ideal area for walkers, climbers and wildlife watchers.

Many people return to Aberdovey year after year. It is such an ideal place to relax or use as a base to explore the wild and rugged West side of Wales. Do not be surprised if you want to come and live in this area. Incidentally, many Canadian tourists who visit the area say it reminds them of home only on a smaller scale! Some recommendation .

I have decided to create a comprehensive study on Gywnedd in Wales. Here is a short video introducing the area. This video really shows the beautiful sites and sceneric places to visit and explore when  goping there.

More of our Richard Billingham inspired work. Here you can see in the top image we found and abandoned chair and beer can that had been left in an empty alley way, possibly a memory of some sort belonging to a drunken man or woman, or even a hot day where someone wanted to relax with a beer in the sun, lounging on a chair. Myself and Maciej thought this shot was very effective.

The following pictures are photographs taken by myself and Maciej Buras. We went outside at night time around 11:24pm. At that time we knew no persons would be around and so we shot some alley ways, derelict places and roads that seemed to have quite an eerie feel to them. This is in the style of Richard Billingham’s - Black Country work for Anita’s class in contextual studies. Just like Billingham’s work, our images have the same dark and lonely emotions to them and almost make you scared as it was quite scary for us going out at such a late time in the evening, with no people being around. And we also enjoyed the aspect and theme to the images captured as it is very appealing to the eye. The tones and shading stay rather dark, once again, creating that unpleasant look to the places in the pictures and with there being no people or colours in the pictures automatically makes your mood turn to negativity, which shows how important colour is to pictures and any other source of artwork.

The advertisement I have chosen to study is an advertisement for firstcarstory.com
It is an advertisement launching the new Subaru Impreza car. I really love the way the advertisement has been created with the use of illustration and animation combined, it is really beautifully rendered. The colours and style used which is a very sketchy and unfinished design really made me look and think wow! It looks like someone is drawing the pictures and words as you watch which is a brilliant idea. The connection it has to society is that the majority of the peoples population have cars and the memories and nostalgia drivers will experience when seeing the ad will give happy memories of their first car. I think the target audience for this is drivers possibly young adults and above, as it describes having your first car and the memories of it.
